The goal Introducing students to semiconductor lasers and photonic integrated circuits (PIC) design. Gaining knowledge in methods for analysis, synthesis, and experimental investigation of waveguide characteristics, passive and active optical components, and modeling and experimental investigation of epitaxial structures characteristics. Gaining practical knowledge in measuring and characterization of PIC.
The outcome Upon course completion, students should be able to understand basic semiconductor lasers and photonic circuits operation principles, design different kinds of semiconductor lasers and photonic circuits and experimentally investigate basic features of semiconductor lasers and photonic circuits.
    Contents
Contents of lectures Mirrors and resonators for semiconductor lasers. Methods for analysis and calculation of the supported modes in semiconductor waveguides. Photonic integrated circuits (PIC). Lasers (DFB, DBR, tunable and externally-modulated), passive components, waveguide photodiodes, transceivers and triplexers, PIC for coherent optical systems. Basic measurements and characterization methods for PIC.
Contents of exercises Auditory exercises: Numerical examples based on lectures.
