The goal | Teach the students about special optical fibers and other optical components used in the construction of fiber-optic sensors. Introduce the physical principles of operation, measurement techniques, classification and characterization of fiber-optic sensors. Based on this knowledge a student should be qualified to estimate when is optimal to use the fiber-optic sensors and how to do it.
The outcome | After the course student should know measuring methods used in fiberoptic sensors, as well as fiberoptic sensor types, and physical principles of operation. Student should be able to design and implement fiberoptic sensors for industry.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Principles of operation for fiber-optics sensors. Optical fibers, properties and technology. Measurement techniques. Intensity modulation. Interferometry and polarimetry for optical sensing. Gas spectroscopy. Fiber-optic gyroscope. Fiber Bragg gratings. Laser Doppler velocimetry. Fiber optic sensors for electric power systems.
Contents of exercises | Laboratory exercises in which students work with fiber optics and components. Demonstration of fiber-optic current and magnetic field sensors based on the principle of Faraday effect. Demonstration of OTDR. Demonstration of fiber-optic hydrophone.
