The goal | Students will learn about features and performance of different router architectures. Course will help to professionals who will work, or work, on network installations and maintainance to get insight into the internal structure of the equipment which they handle. Finally, students will be introduced to the research and development in the area of Internet routers.
The outcome | Students who complete this course will be able to design efficient networks according to the customer requirements, and to solve problems which are caused by the imperfections or flaws of packet switches and Internet routers. Students will also gain basic knowledge required for the development of networking devices.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | First, we will explain main components of the Internet routers, their functions and interconnection. Then, we will analyze all important architectures of switches and routers used in practice, according to the interconnection of their components. Finally, we will explain the architecture of the control plane for learning about the network topology, used for packet forwarding.
Contents of exercises | The Internet router prototype developed in our Lab for Internet Technologies, in collaboration with institute Iritel, will be presented. Students will model routers or packet switches in programming language C, and analyze their performance for the communication traffic with the given statistics.
