Contents of lectures | Ionizing radiation types and sources. Source activity and intensity. Radiometric quantities. Microscopic cross-section. Interactions of radiation with matter. Radiation detectors: visual, gas, semiconductor and scintillation. Slow and fast neutron detectors. Spectrometry of alpha, beta, gamma and neutron radiation. Electronic circuits for detector signal processing. New detector types. | |||
Contents of exercises | Problem-solving exercises and laboratory assignments (background radiation measurements, measuring the decay constant, statistical fluctuations in nuclear processes, properties of the Geiger counter, finding the attenuation coefficient of a material, gamma spectroscopy). | |||
