The goal | The aim of the course is to give students insight into using operating systems for embedded computers, with Embedded Linux as example. This course enables students to prepare and build Embedded Linux on a target development board, as well as build, configure and use Embedded Linux, device drivers for hardware interaction and applications for user interaction. | |||
The outcome | The student acquire knowledge applicable for the development and use of device drivers and applications for embedded Linux. | |||

Contents of lectures | Introduction to Embedded operating systems and Embedded Linux, hardware specifics of modern SoC-s on which Embedded Linux is run. Bootloader, Linux kernel, Root filesystem. Linux device drivers, structure, organization and application. Driver class. Kernel modules and integration into kernel, user space drivers. Linux applications, communication with device drivers and Linux kernel. | |||
Contents of exercises | Tools: git, Make, gcc, gdb, grep, find. Qemu for emulation of ARM development system. Configuration and cross-compilation of bootloader and Linux kernel. Development and debugging of Linux device drivers for different driver classes. Development and debugging of applications. | |||
