19D061KO - Quantum Optics

Course specification
Course title Quantum Optics
Acronym 19D061KO
Study programme Electrical Engineering and Computing
Module Nanoelectronics and Photonics
Type of study doctoral studies
Lecturer (for classes)
Lecturer/Associate (for practice)
    Lecturer/Associate (for OTC)
      ESPB 9.0 Status elective
      Condition none
The goal The objective of the course is to introduce quantum mechanical models of light and its interactions with atoms.
The outcome The students are expected to develop skills for theoretical and experimental work in quantum optics, such as squeezed states, inversionless lasers etc. The students are introduced with atomic optics and experimental techniques for polarization, cooling, and trapping of atoms.
      Contents
Contents of lectures Introduction. Density matrix and density operator. Secondary quantization. Quantization of electromagnetic field. Photon. Squeezed states. Vacuum fluctuation. Photon detection and correlation functions. Quantum theory of coherence. Quantum theory of interaction between light and a two-level atom. Quantum theory of laser. Cooperative atomic radiation. Atomic optics.
Contents of exercises The practice could be organized depending on a student's affinity and availability of the laboratory.
