The goal | To introduce students to gate drive requirements of SCRs, BJTs, MOSFETs, and IGBTs. To introduce students to: requirements and implementation of discrete gate drive circuits and gate drive ICs, isolation and line synchronization techniques and measurement methods in control circuits. To integrate and apply previous knowledge of electronics and control theory to control circuit design process. | |||
The outcome | Students should understand the gate drive requirements of semiconductor switching components, as well as functional requirements and technical aspects of control circuits which are necessary for their practical realization. Based on the obtained knowledge, students should be able to design control circuits for semiconductor switching components. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Power supply for control circuits. Power switch gate drive requirements, protections. Circuit layout and its influence on EMI. Power switch and load current measurement circuits. Line commutated converter control circuits: synchronization, protections. Linear control system realization, pole compensation with internal feedback. Reference voltage sources. Signal filtering. Pulse width modulator. | |||
Contents of exercises | Analysis of the operation of the converter control circuits, based on measurements on laboratory prototypes of the converters. Synthesis of the control circuit with desired properties. | |||
