    Condition
    The goal Introducing students to components, systems and techniques of signal processing in the high-bit-rate coherent optical communication systems. Investigation of signal degradation due to nonlinear effects, and possible use of these effects for optical signal reshaping, synchronizing and regenerating, as well as wavelength conversion in all-optical networks.
    The outcome Understading components and subsystems operation principles, necessary for advanced modulation formats based high-bit-rate coherent optical systems realization.

    Contents of lectures Methods for analysis and calculation of the supported modes in semiconductor waveguides. Theory of directional couplers. Mach-Zender and electroapsorbtion modulator. Basic nonlinear effects. Fabry Perot lasers: gain and spontaneous emission spectra. Semiconductor optical amplifiers. Signal regeneration. Wavelength converters. Coherent communication systems. Advanced modulation formats.
    Contents of exercises Auditory exercises: Numerical examples based on lectures.
