The goal | Hardware configuration of the radio system. Design and organization of a transiver location for different radio systems. Concepts of narrowband and wideband transceiver. Power amplifier linearization techniques: feedback, predistortion, feedforward and combined approaches. Realisation problems of reconfigurable transceiver. RF transceiver design for MIMO system.
The outcome | Students are familiar with the principles of different transceiver architectures. They could analyse the hardware structure of the radio station and perform software configuration of it.

Contents of lectures | The basic transceiver architectures. Antenna systems (and adaptive). Antenna downtilt. Connecting the transceiver to the antenna system. Up and down converters. LO synthesizers. Automatic gain control. Special techniques of sampling. Digital variants of superheterodyne and direct-conversion transceivers. Power amplifier linearisation techniques. Reconfigurable transceivers and MIMO systems.
Contents of exercises | Measurements of signals at characteristic points of superheterodyne receiver. Analysis of attenuation of the system for connecting the transceiver to the antenna system and analysis of possible realizations of the system for remote electrical downtilt by using the software packages developed for those purpose. Analysis of hardware and software configurations of GSM and UMTS base stations.
