The goal Introduction to principles behind hearing, hearing disorders, diagnostic methods, hearing conservation, hearing aids and speech intelligibility. Providing concepts of measuring auditory perception and function. Training in fundamental measurement methods in audiology.
The outcome Acquiring knowledge of the elements of technical audiology, hearing, hearing disorders and diagnostic methods. Acquiring skills and experience of applying measurement methods used in audiology and hearing research.
      Contents
Contents of lectures Hearing (anatomy and physiology of human ear). Transmission of sound through the ear. Sound perception (auditory system properties, concepts of hearing thresholds, loudness, loudness level and masking). Hearing impairments and their perceptual consequences. Instruments and devices applied for measurements in audiology. Audiometric test rooms. Methods for measuring auditory perception and function (audiometric measurements - tests of hearing sensitivity, pure tone audiometry, impedance audiometry, speech audiometry). Auditory brain stem (ABR) response. Otoacoustic emissions. Hearing aids. Hearing aids fitting. Measurements of linear and non-linear hearing aids. Hearing conservation and hearing protectors. Speech and speech intelligibility. Measurement and calculation of speech intelligibility (AI, SII, STI). Evaluation and interpretation of the audiology measurement results. Auditory models and their applications.
Contents of exercises Practical work is related to experiments on sound transmission through the ear, measurements of acoustical properties of the ear, calibration of audiometric equipment and measurements of auditory perception.
