Graphene and beyond: physics meets chemistry

Carbon forms many allotropes of which graphite and diamond are known from ancient times and several new ones (fullerenes, nanotubes) were discovered only in the last 20 years. The two-dimensional form, graphene, was fabricated only in 2004 but in the meantime it is a rapidly rising star in materials science. The Nobel Prize Physics 2010 was awarded for the new physics that was discovered in this novel material. This atomically thin two-dimensional material exhibits exceptionally high crystal and electronic quality. Despite its short history it has already resulted in new physics and many proposals for potential applications opening up new perspectives for carbon based electronics, opto-electronics and mechanics.
Electrons in graphene obey a linear dispersion relation resulting in the observation of a number of peculiar electronic properties, e.g. anomalous quantum Hall effect, absence of localization and minimal conductivity. Due to its unusual electronic spectrum it has led to the emergence of a new paradigm of relativistic condensed matter physics.
By chemical functionalization of graphene it is possible to realize new materials with very different electronic, optical, magnetic and mechanical properties.
After the discovery of graphene many new families of atomic thin materials have emerged as e.g. transition metal dichalcogenides, silicene, phosphorene etc.
In this talk I will give an overview of this exciting new field in condensed matter physics.
